Welcome to June! I’m excited to announce that this month’s article is “The Mountain,” by Andrew Marantz. Yes, we’re going to tackle white nationalism and the alt-right.
I’m really happy that you’ve decided to try out Article Club this month — welcome! Also, thank you for being a loyal reader of The Highlighter. My hope is that you find your Article Club experience a valuable one.
Wow. That article was riveting! I read the whole thing and stuck my husband with dinner. I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to see how it turned out. I appreciate the end too as the perspective changed from third to first person of the reporter. Since Trump's election, I've tried to make sense of the rise of fascism. Especially since the frightening images of the "no mask" protesters in front of capitals, fully armed! The goofy logic of people like that (especially our president) makes me want to find some logic at least in their psychology, but I have no idea. It is like a cult, and at some point people can get brainwashed if they're vulnerable enough to do so. I truly hope that reporting on this part of society can prevent another massive tragedy in the long run. I am currently watching Babylon Berlin on Netflix. It's about the end of the Weimar Republic. As you know, the Nazis were not taken seriously right before the fall of the Weimar Republic. So, maybe we should take these alt-right losers seriously, despite their foolish beliefs. Truly frightening stuff.
