April’s article will be “The Miseducation of the American Boy,” by Peggy Orenstein, bestselling author of Boys & Sex. Join our discussion! articleclub.org
I'm late but I hope I can still be in! I worked with a local bookstore to have Ms. Ornstein come and talk about her book Girls and Sex. Interestingly, even though the overall message of the book is so important for students to receive, we weren't allowed to have the talk on my school's campus.
I'm late to the party, but I'm in! My name is Jeannette LaFors. I live in San Francisco with my husband and two teens, a son aged 17 and a daughter aged 14. I taught high school for many years and continue to work in education, mainly now in the adult learning space. I met Peggy when I was in college and am a huge fan of her work. She was living in New York City when my former boyfriend and I took a summer trip there. She is incredibly bright, delightfully optimistic and refreshingly curious. I've read several of her books and articles -- and recently saw her present in San Francisco. I'm reading Boys & Sex now.
Hi, my name is Phillip Chardon and I'm in! I work with a lot of young men, I was once a young man, and my daughter will interact with young men in some capacity of her choosing, as the very least likely as peers, co-workers, etc., so lots of angles to think about.
I'm in! Life has gotten a little crazier recently as I am home schooling four kids while trying to distance teach my students, but I have read her book (trying to get a jump start on parenting my son) and I'd love to talk with folks about her work!
Hi, I'm Peter, and I'm excited to join. At one point I used to be a teenage boy(!) and don't have much interaction with them these days. But I heard Peggy talking about this book on a podcast last month and found it fascinating. Looking forward to digging in!
Hi everyone. I'm in! I'm Tyler, and I'm currently running Strand Elementary, a prestigious and highly selective "distance learning" elementary school (you must be one of my 5th grade twin daughters to attend), with my wife Nathalie in Menlo Park, CA. I read the article when it came out in the Atlantic and discussed it with my wife, but I'm looking forward to more perspectives on it.
Hi! I'm Camille and I am really excited to join Article club this month! I'm looking forward to digging into this article and sharing thoughts, ideas and questions with a diverse community of perspective and thought! I'm in!
Welcome to Article Club, Camille! I am really happy that you are IN this month. Thank you also for your loyal readership of The Highlighter, and we all look forward to hearing your perspective.
Hi! I'm Caitlin and currently sheltering in place with 3 boys! 1 big and 2 little. I am often think about how to raise my boys in a way that that allows them to be authentic, vulnerable, and confident. It can be tricky because there are some deep-rooted expectations within me (even more than my husband) about what it means to be a boy. My 6yo doesn't know how to ride a bike and seems to have no interest in sports, would I be as reflective/curious about this if he were a girl? I'm not sure...I want to raise sensitive, sweet boys but there are times when I catch myself thinking (not saying) "toughen up!" Anyway, with my 2 active boys I have little time to read but I did read this article and looking forward to participating for my first time! I'm in!
This is great news that you're IN, Caitlin! Welcome to Article Club. You are going to find out that everyone is kind and generous (like you). I look forward to your perspective as a mom of multiple boys!
I'm in! I'm Carina and I work in adult and community education in the Boston area. Three main reasons I'm in: 1) Laurie Halse Anderson, author of YA novel Speak and more recently SHOUT, talks a lot about this and I am interested in another perspective 2) one of my favorite former professors teaches a class at Boston University on "boyhood" and this will give me something to discuss with her too 3) Article Club is the best - keeps me reading and meeting awesome new people!
Carina, you’re 4-for-4! Thank you for being IN again. Please feel free to invite Ms. Anderson and your former professor to join the discussion! (My claim to fame: Ms. Anderson tweeted me once.)
I’m in! I’m trying to raise a well educated America boy, not a miseducated one and I am into PO’s take on such thing. Thanks for giving me a deadline, Mark and the article club!
Really happy you're going to be participating in this month’s Club, Rebecca! If you know of other bold parents like you who are raising well-educated American boys, please invite them!
I am in because I want to continue chatting with interesting people and since I teach high school boys but was not one myself, I have many thoughts about why the teen boys I see today are VERY different than the ones I grew up with during ( as one of my student's calls it) the dinosaur times!
Hi everyone, here is where I say I’m IN! I’m the editor of Article Club, an educator in the Bay Area, and a former high school English and social studies teacher. Looking forward to re-reading this outstanding article and discussing it with all of you.
