Yes, my goodness is correct. I read a piece in Jonathan Haidt's newsletter this morning by a writer who claims Gen Z. They said they wish they had grown up in the '90s, when kids could be kids. Thank you for reading my newsletter!
First, my condolences to Melinda on losing Macy. She looks so sweet in that photo! It’s never easy to lose such a good friend.
Thought provoking articles, as usual—and sad. “The aims of attention and economy are incompatible,” struck me as uniquely true; full immersion one way or the other seems faulty, but this is surely a Gordian Knot.
So now we teach kids not to send nude pics over social media, since we’re a very long way off from losing our cultural prudery. But victims could not so easily kill themselves if guns were simply kept locked—and the overwhelming majority of them are never locked!
As for the left-turned right couple now teaching for a religious foundation, I think two issues are in play: 1) all religion is problematic in forcing & enforcing ideas and ideals, & 2) this couple clearly hope, working through their religious foundation for a cut of profits, to make a LOT more money than they did as public school teachers in California. That’s why they chose Florida, where they hope to amass far greater numbers of students, because few families in CA would join them. (I do hope they also teach that some Quakers had slaves, and that some were later interested in providing reparations!)
Interesting article. Very relevant as I teach too. Technology has a lot to answer for.
Thank you for reading it and sharing your thoughts! I'm definitely trending no-phones and limited Chromebooks. What grade do you teach?
My pupils are only Years 3 and 4 so 8 and 9 year olds but my friends in older groups tell me the same kind of stories.
Wow, this was a thought-provoking selection, and each one a little bit heartbreaking in its own way, the first one obviously way more so, my goodness!
Thank you for the gift links, Mark!
