1619: It’s discussion week!
Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday at 2 pm PT to discuss Chapters 1-3
Welcome to Week 6! Last week, we read “Sugar” and optionally reacted to a key passage from the chapter. Thank you to Sara and Ziba for your contributions.
This week, we’re getting ready for our second discussion coming up this Sunday, March 13, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. Note: Clocks spring forward this weekend, so the start time might feel “earlier.” (For your reference: Here’s our reading schedule, which I encourage you to save, bookmark, or print out).
Here are a few ways to prepare for this Sunday:
Catch up on Chapters 1-3 if necessary
For each essay: Identify one topic, question, or passage you’d like to explore
Think about: What are connections you see among all three essays?
Reflect on what you learned and why it is meaningful to you
I’m looking forward to seeing you soon! Here’s the plan for this Sunday:
We’ll convene all together for a brief introduction. It’ll be shorter than last time, so we have more time for discussion.
Then we’ll break off into our small conversation groups. We’ll have 60-65 minutes to discuss the three essays. Note: I’ll be reaching out to facilitators, and we’ll be thinking of ways to best use our time together.
At the end of the session, we’ll come back as a whole book club for individual reflection and group celebrations.
Here’s a reminder about which group you’re in:
Group 1: Sara, Sharon, Mark, Paula, Steven, Susan
Group 2: Summer, Valerie, Toronzo, Ziba, Camille
Group 3: Abby, Trevor, Telannia, Jenn, Jennifer, Leah
Group 4: Maureen, Molly, Elise, Kira, Elizabeth B, Jessica, Monica

That’s about it for now! I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 2 pm PT. (The Zoom link is in your calendar invitation. I’ll be logging on 10 minutes early.) All right, let’s head to next steps.
Next steps
If you haven’t RSVPd yet to the calendar invite: Please do!
Optionally: What are your hopes for this week’s discussion? In the comments, say hi to your groupmates and share your hopes for our second meeting.
See you in a few days! Reach out if you have any questions. All you need to do is hit reply. Happy reading.
I’m looking forward to discussing this week for a whole hour. Wow, I don’t usually set aside that much time to go deep. I especially look forward to learning what my group members thought about democracy, race, and sugar that I completely missed.
